Waste Disposal App
Based on an article from CBC in 2018, Toronto has a recycling contamination rate of 27%, the largest in Ontario. For comparison, Vancouver has a contamination rate of 4.6%. Jim McKay, general manager of waste management services for the City of Toronto, estimates that each decrease in percentage point in contamination can save 600K to 1M in recycling costs in Toronto. To make matters worse, recycling isn’t simple; the rules are different depending on which Ontario city you are in. For example, in Toronto, plastic bags (except black plastic bags!) can be placed in the blue bin, but in York Region, plastic bags belong in the garbage or they can be dropped off at your nearby community waste depot for free.
How might we make recycling simpler when recycling rules vary depending on your location and there are often exceptions and rules before an item is considered correctly discarded?
The Final Design
The final product is an app that allows you to easily search for an item and change your location depending on where you are. Inspired by Waste Wizard’s search functionality, this solution focuses on the flexibility of changing your location so that you get the most accurate waste disposal instructions. In order to solve complex recycling rules, the home page includes quick generic recycling tips that apply all across Ontario.
